Welcome to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Homeless Initiative Page! Although this social media site was created in the summer of 2014, our Homeless Initiative began in earnest several years prior.
It all began in 2009, after seeing a rise in the homeless population within Hillsborough County. Some estimates at that time indicated we had the highest per-capita homeless population of any city or county within the United States. Complaints of panhandling, soliciting, and general neighborhood blight were understandably on the rise as a result. The traditional law enforcement response at that point was to make arrests where applicable. However, we quickly discovered the same individuals at the same locations in relatively short order after they were released from those minor charges. The situation only worsened.
Unsatisfied with doing business as usual, Sheriff David Gee issued a directive to identify different techniques to deal with the homeless problem, to find a better way. The only caveat was the process had to offer a long-term solution. What resulted began as one deputy simply being an advocate for the homeless focusing on getting them into permanent housing rather than temporary incarceration.
Since that time we have, with the help of our community partners, found permanent housing for literally hundreds of homeless individuals. The scope of the initiative has grown to now require two full time deputies from District 3 alone, with similar efforts occurring in our other three districts. The deputies assigned to this initiative are truly very passionate about their work. Many of them began to personally blog and use social media during the infancy of this program in order to get our message out to those in need or who may know of others in need.
This D3 Homeless Initiative page was created as one clearing house for all things related to our program. Those assigned to the initiative will continue to add stories and content and we welcome you to participate in the important discussion. If you are aware of anyone in need, please contact:
