The “Scouting for Books” initiative is an opportunity for you, a member of our community, to donate your slightly used books today in order to allow an underprivileged member of our community to experience the joys of reading tomorrow. Please, give today and help our community to rediscover the opportunity to experience the rewards of intellectual discovery and to embrace an enhanced appreciation for literature and literacy! Through our collective efforts as a community, we can act to eliminate illiteracy one book at a time. Surprisingly, even in St. Petersburg and the greater Tampa Bay area, illiteracy rates continue to rise among the following groups: the immigrant, minority and youth populations. Additionally, many service personnel in the United States Armed Forces and many elderly members of our community begin to lose interest in literature because their library collections are unable to be regularly replenished. But by donating our slightly used books to these populations of individuals, there is no doubt that we will be able to change this apathetic outlook toward literature into one of excitement!
The “Scouting for Books” program hopes that, through this collection and distribution process, every member of our community will remember the large impact that reading has made in their lives. While new technologies continue to be developed that jeopardize the position and necessity of books in our society, it is a definite fact that ‘the words on the page’ will never disappear completely, and neither will the means of deciphering them. While acting locally, we must consider the wide-spread impact of our actions – while the success of the “Scouting for Books” Book Drive only directly affects our community, our efforts will have assisted us in making an international step toward eliminating illiteracy everywhere. If each and every one of us assists in making a local change, we will be one step closer to making a lasting global impact. As Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Be the change you wish to see.” Let’s ensure that the effects of illiteracy are brought directly to the attention of the public. Let’s help to make certain the “Scouting for Books” Book Drive meets its goals in promoting literature and increasing literacy rates in our community. Also, ensure that this campaign can adequately represent the social and educational changes that you wish to see in our community by making your voice heard and contributing to our cause. Thank you for your unwavering support for the Boy Scouts of America and for your interest in promoting literacy!
